Last year we were thrilled to provide art awards for the TRI St. Andrews races and this year, we are happy to be doing it again!

Today, a box arrived in the mail. Inside were stacks of six brand new prints.

Now comes matting and bagging and then... the big event (July 3-6, 2014).

We've all got a lot going on in the studio these days.

Geoff is finishing up a large line painting which is set to travel West. Jantje is busy putting the finishing touches on some pieces for the annual Folk Art exhibit she organizes at Kingsbrae Garden. I'm just starting the second painting of a new series.

This morning, we needed some peppy music to keep us going and Bohemian Like You by The Dandy Warhols seemed to fit the bill.

Enjoy!

Lately we've had a lot of birds flying into our windows and although none have perished, we have had a number of stunned little ones who end up laying on our porch (or flying around in the studio!).

And so, we decided to do something about it by creating some window clings.

This is a great activity for kids (and adults) of all ages. All you need is some plastic (we used paper protectors that you would put into a binder) and some fabric paint. (It's important that you use fabric paint and not regular paint.)

It's a good idea to add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid to the fabric paint before you start using it, although I have to admit, we skipped that step :)

Here's how our window clings came together...
As artists, we are honoured to be a part of the re-creation of the historic Algonquin Resort and we really love the fact that General Manager Tim Ostrem and his team have - from day one - been focused on local talent.

There's something truly mystical about winter by the sea. Whether watching the sun rise or set, or wandering along the seashore, the colours in winter range from vibrant to pastel as familiar scenes go through constant change. Wind, rain, snow, sleet, ice and sunshine take turns working their magic on the land and sea - like paintbrushes on a canvas.

Here are a few photographs of the winter scenery outside the studio...
To celebrate the holidays, we've decided to post a photo of a work of
Geoff pulled the turntable out of storage recently - allegedly in preparation for our Christmas Open House...

But, we all know he did it so he could have a chance to dig through all the old vinyl we have tucked away in cardboard boxes. :)

Boney M's Christmas Album was one of the first he played. Not long after, he rediscovered the disco group's Nightflight to Venus record.

As a result, one song in particular has been played over and over (and over) again in the studio.

For you now is Boney M performing "Painter Man".

Enjoy!
About the artist:
Larissa was born in the mid 80s on the edge of the prairies in Canada.
She was six when she knew she was an artist. At age fourteen, she took
the first glassblowing course available to people under 18. In 2008 she
completed her BFA in glass at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
In 2009, Larissa moved to the coast to take a job as a glassblower on
Granville Island. She now divides her time between Vancouver BC, and
Calgary AB. Jarea Art Studio - Folk N Finehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16330098826510361070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245463762631167012.post-78481723170809431692013-12-13T19:00:00.000-04:002014-03-11T12:56:12.465-03:00Mixed Media by Andrea Mulder-SlaterThe Art of December - 12/13/13: Mixed Media by Andrea Mulder-Slater

This little mixed media piece was created by me....

For a mixed media piece, I first do a quick pencil sketch on watercolour paper.

Then, I wet the paper by running a soaking wet paintbrush over the entire sheet.

Next, I dip a wooden skewer stick into ink (generally black) and trace over my pencil lines. Because the paper is wet, the ink runs. Everywhere.

I begin to add watercolour to the paper while there is still a fair amount of moisture on the page.

Once dry, I embellish the work with soft pastel.

Raku is a type of Japanese pottery that is traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony, most often in the form of tea bowls. It is traditionally characterized by being hand shaped rather than thrown; fairly porous vessels, which result from low firing temperatures; and the removal of pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot. In the traditional Japanese process, the fired raku piece is removed from the hot kiln and is allowed to cool in the open air or in a container filled with combustible material. Raku techniques have been modified by contemporary potters worldwide.

Today we have a line painting by Geoff. Geoff's line paintings
are painted using one continuous line with a beginning, and an ending.
Although it changes colour, the line never touches, or crosses itself.

First, he draws the basic image, however, that is where the planning ends.
The line takes shape, as he paints it, with no set path or direction.

Intellectually, the line is one of the most basic elements of art and is nearly impossible to escape as an artist.

Fundamentally and spiritually, the line represents a certain
connectedness - a thread that ties objects and individuals together.

Water, trees, land and man-made structures are all linked together.

He creates with line, not as contour, but as a full image, as miles of land, sea and sky are covered in a single stroke.
About the artist:
Geoff is a New Brunswick artist who lives in St. Andrews. In addition
to creating images using watercolour, acrylic and graphite, he also
makes prints using woodblock, intaglio and lithograph techniques. His
unique style of painting (which he invented more than ten years ago) is known as line painting. These are images that are created using
one continuous line. He is also a muralist and his outdoor art can be
seen throughout St. Andrews. Geoff studied landscape design at Fanshawe
College, fine art at Georgian College and printmaking under a master
printer. His work is collected worldwide.

About the artist:
Doug Dorken skillfully carves his relief sculptures from single pieces of wood
so that figures and landscape seem to emerge from within. Depending on
the piece, he may use kiln-dried pine, poplar, or "sea-seasoned" wood to
create his carvings. Following in the footsteps of his shipwright
father, Doug took up carving in1994 after retiring from a career in the
navy. Jarea Art Studio - Folk N Finehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16330098826510361070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245463762631167012.post-87749083006164347162013-12-08T17:00:00.000-04:002014-03-11T12:56:12.473-03:00Abstract by Andrea Mulder-SlaterThe Art of December - 12/08/13: Abstract by Andrea Mulder-Slater
This 4" x 4" painting was inspired by the sun, sea and surf. It is
an abstract with a hint of realism as you "look through" the colors and
textures. It's tiny, for those who love art but are short on space. It is framed in pine and ready to hang.
