We love Autumn here at Jarea Art! Cool nights, warm daytime breezes and lots of apples in the orchards. We spent the afternoon collecting apples yesterday which we brought home and made into pie. There's nothing quite like the smell of warm cinnamon. Am I right?
All of this got me thinking about a wonderful floorcloth we produced for a client in Massachusetts.
It began with a sketch:
From there, we stretched our canvas and began painting. That's Jantje working away on the background.
Once the main background colors were complete, it was time to start laying out the apples. We did this with a nice, bright pink.
We continued by adding more details to the apples, including stems, shadows and shine.
Once the painting was complete, we sealed the cloth and removed it from the frame. We finished the edges and then we had a look at our handiwork.
Here's how the cloth looked in its new home in Massachusetts.
And now, it's time for apple pie :)

Just us together
This summer, Jantje was part of the National Sculpture Competition at Kingsbrae Garden. Here are some photos of her stone sculpture which is currently on display.

Summer 2012
This summer, we decided to freshen up the buildings by the bay. We began by repainting the floors. Building 1 was painted a nice rusty brown - reminiscent of mud flats. Building 2 was painted a nice, bright turquoise - as was the trim on the outside of the buildings.
We renamed our spaces "Jarea Art Gallery, Folk 'n Fine" to reflect the fact that we now carry a nice selection of folk art and fine art created by artists from across the province. This year and are thrilled to announce that, in addition to the work of Jantje (Blokhuis-Mulder), Geoff (Slater) and I (Andrea Mulder-Slater), we have work from:
Wilma Blokhuis, Larissa Blokhuis, Jackie Guthrie, Gerry Cloud, Cedar Sky, Randy Russell, Jamie-Lynn Doak, Joe Hunt, Beatrice McFadden, Mary Cormier, Lillian O'Connor, Curtis McFadden, Christin Lambert, Leo Narcisse Robichaud, Betty Stuart, Tangled Love Decor (Chavah Haddon and Zach Palmer), and more (oh my!)
Here is a little taste of how our spaces are shaping up this summer:

Water Tank Touch Up 2012
It was 2003 when we, along with a number of high school students, painted the town's water tank...
Four years went by and the elements took their toll. So, in 2007, Geoff did a mural touch up - to freshen things up a bit...
Now, in 2012, the water tank underwent a complete paint job. The majority of the work was completed by Geoff, with a little help from me (Andrea), Jantje, Gerald Cloud, Jackie Guthrie, Wilma Blokhuis, and the littlest one.
Ta da!
