Mixed Media by Andrea Mulder-Slater

The Art of December - 12/13/13: Mixed Media by Andrea Mulder-Slater

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

To celebrate the holidays, we've decided to post a photo of a work of art (available for sale in our studio/gallery) each day between December 1st and 24th.

This little mixed media piece was created by me....

For a mixed media piece, I first do a quick pencil sketch on watercolour paper.

Then, I wet the paper by running a soaking wet paintbrush over the entire sheet.

Next, I dip a wooden skewer stick into ink (generally black) and trace over my pencil lines. Because the paper is wet, the ink runs. Everywhere.

I begin to add watercolour to the paper while there is still a fair amount of moisture on the page.

Once dry, I embellish the work with soft pastel.

Abstract by Andrea Mulder-Slater

The Art of December - 12/08/13: Abstract by Andrea Mulder-Slater

This 4" x 4" painting was inspired by the sun, sea and surf. It is an abstract with a hint of realism as you "look through" the colors and textures. It's tiny, for those who love art but are short on space. It is framed in pine and ready to hang.

Today we have a photo of a painting by yours truly. It's an abstract inspired by water reflections. Like all of my abstracts, this painting includes a hint of iridescent pigment, somewhere on the canvas.

Red. A painting and a musical interlude

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

I was in the studio this week working on yet another abstract. This one features many shades of red and - as is typical lately - the littlest one helped me place my colours.

Here's a peek...

Which reminds me... I haven't listed to Treble Charger in years. Remember them? If not, here's a reminder.

Coastal abstraction

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

When looking for art inspiration, the sea never disappoints. With tides that rise and fall nearly 30 feet daily, one view can often provide thousands of vignettes. I am always excited by the colors of the coast, and by how the time of year and time of day can change familiar surroundings into unfamiliar ones.

Although my abstract paintings have always been loosely based on nature, I have been thinking for a while about taking a more literal approach.

I produced the first of what I hope to be many images inspired by the rock/water/horizon/sky view near our studio. Here's a little peek at the process - and the product.

Water Tank Touch Up 2012

It was 2003 when we, along with a number of high school students, painted the town's water tank...

Four years went by and the elements took their toll. So, in 2007, Geoff did a mural touch up - to freshen things up a bit...

Now, in 2012, the water tank underwent a complete paint job. The majority of the work was completed by Geoff, with a little help from me (Andrea), Jantje, Gerald Cloud, Jackie Guthrie, Wilma Blokhuis, and the littlest one.

Ta da!
