December 16, 2013

This lovely bracelet was created by Jantje using a discarded spoon, discovered in an antique shop. After hammering the heck out of it, Jantje bent the spoon and added some glass beads and wire. The result is a truly magnificent piece of jewellery -- completely one of a kind.

Musical Interlude: Painter Man

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

Geoff pulled the turntable out of storage recently - allegedly in preparation for our Christmas Open House...

But, we all know he did it so he could have a chance to dig through all the old vinyl we have tucked away in cardboard boxes. :)

Boney M's Christmas Album was one of the first he played. Not long after, he rediscovered the disco group's Nightflight to Venus record.

As a result, one song in particular has been played over and over (and over) again in the studio.

For you now is Boney M performing "Painter Man".

Enjoy!

Mixed Media by Andrea Mulder-Slater

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

To celebrate the holidays, we've decided to post a photo of a work of art (available for sale in our studio/gallery) each day between December 1st and 24th.

 December 13, 2013

This little mixed media piece was created by me....

For a mixed media piece, I first do a quick pencil sketch on watercolour paper.

Then, I wet the paper by running a soaking wet paintbrush over the entire sheet.

Next, I dip a wooden skewer stick into ink (generally black) and trace over my pencil lines. Because the paper is wet, the ink runs. Everywhere.

I begin to add watercolour to the paper while there is still a fair amount of moisture on the page.

Once dry, I embellish the work with soft pastel.

Have a look at these lovely Raku tea bowls created by potter Randy Russell...

Raku is a type of Japanese pottery that is traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony, most often in the form of tea bowls. It is traditionally characterized by being hand shaped rather than thrown; fairly porous vessels, which result from low firing temperatures; and the removal of pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot. In the traditional Japanese process, the fired raku piece is removed from the hot kiln and is allowed to cool in the open air or in a container filled with combustible material. Raku techniques have been modified by contemporary potters worldwide.

Line Painting by Geoff Slater

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

To celebrate the holidays, we've decided to post a photo of a work of art (available for sale in our studio/gallery) each day between December 1st and 24th.

December 11, 2013

Today we have a line painting by Geoff. Geoff's line paintings are painted using one continuous line with a beginning, and an ending. Although it changes colour, the line never touches, or crosses itself.

First, he draws the basic image, however, that is where the planning ends. The line takes shape, as he paints it, with no set path or direction.

Intellectually, the line is one of the most basic elements of art and is nearly impossible to escape as an artist.

Fundamentally and spiritually, the line represents a certain connectedness - a thread that ties objects and individuals together.

Water, trees, land and man-made structures are all linked together.

He creates with line, not as contour, but as a full image, as miles of land, sea and sky are covered in a single stroke.

This 4" x 4" painting was inspired by the sun, sea and surf. It is an abstract with a hint of realism as you "look through" the colors and textures. It's tiny, for those who love art but are short on space. It is framed in pine and ready to hang.

Nothing says cozy like a warm, handknit poncho. This one, made by Benitta Wilcox features various shades of violet. Benitta's creations often combine many different types of fibre, a mixture of colours and texture or an unusual twist on a common pattern. You may even find a bead, or the occasional twig or stone somewhere in a design.

Today's photo is a Geoff Slater painting of New Brunswick's second oldest lighthouse -  Head Harbour Light (East Quoddy Light). It is located on Campobello Island - the beloved isle of late U. S. President, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The lighthouse was built in 1829 as a means of helping ships in the area navigate the famous Bay of Fundy fog, high tides, and the treacherous rocks surrounding Campobello Island.

The original octagonal, wooden tower is still in use, and although the light still shines into the bay, it is no longer staffed. There are, however, interpreters on hand to fill you in on the history of the structure and the island.

Known as the "Head Harbour Light" to local residents, the tower is designated as a Classified Heritage Site. The tower has a white-shingled exterior, painted with a red cross. It is believed this distinctive day mark has been on the tower since at least 1850. It is the older sister light of West Quoddy Light in Lubec, Maine.

Nature Walk: The Beach in December

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

This morning, the tide was low and the air was mild and still. It was the perfect time of day for Jantje, the littlest one and I to get outside and collect driftwood for Jantje's sculptures.

Of course, we also picked up a few rocks and seashells along the way as we searched for signs of life at the water's edge.

There's something special about the seashore in late fall. The trees are gray and the seagrass is brown, yet bits of crimson and emerald stand out amongst the neutral colours.

And although we know the snow and ice - not long away - will soon turn the colours to white, we will still wander near the sea and hear the lapping of the waves, because the ocean will never freeze...
